Over 70 community members meeting with Commissioner Berkbigler to discuss the housing crisis and need for an affordable housing trust fund

Our community is in the midst of a historic housing crisis. Thousands of our neighbors are faced with ever-rising rents and the number of those experiencing homelessness continues to increase. Our community desperately needs a better toolkit of regional and local policies to build and preserve affordable housing.

In response to this crisis, ACTIONN has been leading the charge to create the Washoe County Affordable Housing Trust fund. Housing trust funds are distinct funds established by city, county or state governments that receive ongoing dedicated sources of public funding to support the preservation and production of affordable housing and increase opportunities for families and individuals to access decent affordable homes.  Housing trust funds systemically shift affordable housing funding from annual budget allocations to the commitment of dedicated public revenue.

In 2018, we had over 1,000 community conversation about the need for better tools to address our housing crisis. We also led over 750 people to directly engage with Washoe County Commissioners to gain their support for an affordable housing trust fund. This strong show of community support led the Board of County Commissioners to request that an ordinance be brought forward for consideration. We are confident that we will see the creation of the Washoe County Affordable Housing Trust Fund in the first half of 2019!
